chandrika ayurvedic
When I was a kid there was a great metaphysical and spiritual bookstore down the street called the Bodhi Tree. Among the shelves and shelves of spiritual and religious books was a shelf full of little treasures from all over the world. on this shelf I found a little green bar of "Ayurvedic Soap". having no idea what this was, I bought the bar and instantly fell in love. It left my body smelling wonderful, squeaky clean and most of all.... it smelled divine. The scent was both mysterious and awakening. I was instantly in love. I had to learn more...
So, here I am...30 years later and a soap maker. I just HAD to recreate this bar from the plants of my own garden. For starters, what does "Ayurvedic" mean? Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medical system! It is based on ancient writings that rely on a “natural” and holistic approach to physical and mental health. Ayurvedic medicine is one of the world’s oldest medical systems and remains one of India’s traditional health care systems. Ayurvedic treatment combines natural products and elements, diet, exercise, and lifestyle.
My version of this ancient and traditional soap contains Lime peel, orange, sandalwood, and a drop of patchouli to round out the scent. I also add bentonite clay to leave your skin supple and smooth. These plants don"t simply make your skin and shower smell like a magical temple, but they actually have wonderful benefits for the mind and body as well! Lime peel, has some wonderful benefits fro the skin. Lime contains vitamin C and flavonoids, the antioxidants that strengthen collagen. It is also great for fighting acne! Lime has antibacterial properties that can help to improve acne. This is because more often than not acne is caused by bacteria growth on the skin which gets into your pores and causes inflammation leading to sore, red blemishes. Lime can help control this bacteria growth. Sandalwood is another ingredient of this soap. Sandalwood has a sweet, woody, and mysterious scent. It has an association with both Hinduism and Buddhism and its scent is believed to cause relaxation and reduce stress. Some studies show that sandalwood can increase alertness and manage anxiety. Sandalwood can also support wound healing and fight bacteria. Another ingredient is Orange oil. Orange is a well known ingredient in soaps for various reasons. It is known that orange also helps promote the production of collagen. Orange also increase the blood flow to the skin. It is also helpful at soothing dry, irritated skin as well as acne-prone skin. Finally, I add a few drops of patchouli. You can't really identify its scent, but it rounds out the overall scent of this AMAZING soap. Patchouli is also great for treating skin conditions such as dermatitis, acne, or dry, cracked skin.
Try this unforgettable and uniquely soothing soap from Southern India and see why I fell in love with it so many years ago.
